Enstrophy Dynamics of Stochastically Forced Large-Scale Geophysical Flows
Enstrophy is an averagedmeasure of fluid vorticity. This quantity is particularly important in rotating geophysical flows. We investigate the dynamical evolution of enstrophy for large-scale quasi-geostrophic flows under random wind forcing. We obtain upper bounds on the enstrophy, as well as results establishing its Hölder continuity and describing the small-time asymptotics.
متن کاملErgodicity of Stochastically Forced Large Scale Geophysical Flows
We investigate the ergodicity of 2D large scale quasigeostrophic flows under random wind forcing. We show that the quasigeostrophic flows are ergodic under suitable conditions on the random forcing and on the fluid domain, and under no restrictions on viscosity, Ekman constant or Coriolis parameter. When these conditions are satisfied, then for any observable of the quasigeostrophic flows, its ...
متن کاملReduced Dynamics of Stochastically Perturbed Gradient Flows
We consider stochastically perturbed gradient flows in the limit when the amplitude of random fluctuations is small relative to the typical energy scale in the system, and the minima of the energy are not isolated but form submanifolds of the phase space. In this case the limiting dynamics may be described in terms of a diffusion process on these manifolds. We derive explicit equations for this...
متن کاملPredictability and Dynamics of Geophysical Fluid Flows
The central objective of my research in this project is to understand the mathematical and physical connections between the bred-growing-mode and singular vector techniques recently developed for numerical weather prediction, the Lyapunov vectors and exponents of dynamical systems theory, and instability theories of geophysical fluid dynamics. My intent is to gain insight into fundamental mathe...
متن کاملStochastically Forced Mode Water Variability
Substantial interannual to decadal variability is observed in the properties of subtropical mode water of the North Atlantic. In this study the response of mode water to stochastic atmospheric forcing is investigated in a numerical model. In a series of experiments the response is studied to different components of stochastic atmospheric forcing, such as wind stress, freshwater flux, and heat f...
